Magnetic Mail Sorter Craft Project

What You’ll Need

  • Medium Vertical Magpanel (9-3/16 inches x 12-3/16 inches; www.magpanels.com)
  • 9-inch x 12-inch piece of wool felt (comes with Magpanel)
  • Natural linen blend fabric
  • Two pieces vintage floral sheet fabric, at least 6-1/2 inches x 11 inches each
  • Ribbon
  • Alphabet stamp set
  • Stamp pad
  • Spray adhesive
  • Strong fabric glue (such as Fabri-Tac)
  • Two pieces thin cardboard, 3-1/2 inches x 9 inches each
  • Grommets and setting tools
  • Hammer
  • Scissors
  • Iron

How to create:

  1. Cut piece of linen blend fabric so that it measures approximately 2 inches beyond both height and width of Magpanel. Press to remove all wrinkles. Spray wrong side of fabric with spray adhesive, then center Magpanel on top and press into place. Starting at corners and moving to edges, fold excess fabric to back of Magpanel and generously glue in place. Let dry.
  2. Fold one piece of vintage sheet fabric in half lengthwise and press to form a crease; unfold so that wrong side faces up. Apply spray adhesive to both sides of one piece of cardboard; center on top of fabric and press into place so that top edge rests in fold (fig. 1). Fold down fabric so that cardboard is encased; press into place (fig. 2). Repeat with remaining pieces of vintage sheet fabric and cardboard.
  3.

  4. Place one piece of fabric-covered cardboard on front side of Magpanel so that bottom edge of cardboard aligns with bottom edge of Magpanel (fig. 3). Turn over so wrong side is facing up and, starting at corners and moving to edges, fold excess fabric to back of Magpanel and generously glue in place. Let dry.
  5. Retrieve second piece of fabric-covered cardboard. Fold bottom excess fabric to back side and arrange on top of Magpanel so that bottom edge of cardboard is about one inch from top edge of first panel (fig. 4). Glue excess fabric in place on front of Magpanel to attach bottom of mail pocket, then turn Magpanel over and pull excess fabric around edges and generously glue in place.
  6. Trim away corners of wool felt and glue into place on back of Magpanel.
  7. Use grommet setting tools and hammer to apply grommets to Magpanel holes. Thread a length of ribbon through grommets for hanging.
  8. Use alphabet stamps to apply the word “mail” to linen on area at upper left of top pocket.
  9. Thread a length of ribbon through grommet holes for hanging.
