Shimmering Button Hairpieces

These glitzy hairpieces are made using specialty rhinestone, glass and mother-of-pearl buttons that are wired together and then attached to a headband or hairpin. Once backed with scraps of felt, they become dazzling accessories – perfect for special occasions, or make one in neutrals or your favorite colors for everyday wear.

Headband Materials

  • 12-15 coordinating buttons in various sizes
  • 28 gauge craft or jewelry wire
  • Jewelry pliers and wire cutter
  • Blank metal headband
  • Scrap of felt
  • Fabri-Tac Glue

Headband Instructions

  1. Select a large button and 3-4 smaller buttons. Cut a 7-inch length of wire and bend in half to create a loop; string on one of small buttons and pull to folded end of wire (fig. 1). Insert cut ends of wire together through one of holes in large button and pull through as far as possible, until small button rests on large button (fig. 2). Repeat with remaining small buttons.
  2. Grasp all wires on back of large button and twist together to create a wire stem, tightening small buttons against large button (fig. 3).
    fig 1 - 3
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times so that you have created three button “bouquets”.
  4. Choose largest button “bouquet” and place flat against headband in desired location (off-center tends to look best). Grasp wire stems and begin to wrap tightly around headband until button bouquet is firmly attached (fig. 4). Use jewelry pliers to curl ends under so no sharp edges are exposed.
  5. Repeat step 5 with remaining button bouquets, slightly overlapping first grouping to create a single mass of buttons on headband. Twist wires in and around adjacent button bouquets for security. Add additional buttons as desired (fig. 5).
  6. Cut a small piece of felt to cover wires and glue in place on backside of headband.
    fig 1 - 3
